Cyborgs are becoming real. According to CNN news, Elon Musk’s Neuralink company inserted a chip into a human patient just a few days ago, turning him into a semi-cyborg. A cyborg is a fictional or hypothetical person whose physical abilities are extended beyond normal human limitations by mechanical elements that are built into their body. Based on these fictional characters, people may say that this is a good idea and would help our industry a lot. However, I disagree with this suggestion because cyborgs would lead to a loss of jobs and could also be unsafe.
First of all, cyborgs could lead to a loss of jobs. If we use technology to turn people into half-cyborgs, then everyone would be able to do anything. This would give cybernetically-enhanced people a huge advantage, which could allow them to do multiple jobs at once. This would be unfair for people who studied their hardest in the past and ended up with their spot being taken by cyborgs. Others may say that this may be a good thing, since there will be more intelligent people to become doctors and have other jobs to help the citizens and society. However, this is not always the case. Just because a person becomes a cyborg doesn’t mean that they will understand the situation. For example, when a patient is suffering from mental health problems such as depression, the doctors treating them need the skills to understand. Although cyborgs might be more intelligent than regular humans, they might not have the emotional intelligence needed to do the job well. Understanding is a key part of specific jobs, and I think that that is one of the reasons why cyborgs won’t be beneficial for society. Overall, that is my first reason why cyborgs aren’t necessary.
Secondly, we should not embrace cybernetics because it is very unsafe. Of course, technology might develop in the future, but implanting a chip into someone’s brain does not seem like the best idea. It’s basically like putting a small machine in your head and living with it until you die. In fact, the patient who had the chip implanted into their brain might die very soon, maybe because of an infection or because their body does not function well with the chip inside of it. Some people might want chips and other enhancements in their body because they want to become smarter. But in the end, they could regret their decisions and wish they had not implanted the chip at all. I believe that people should do things that will actually help them and their society, instead of turning them into robots. Therefore, that is my second reason why I think that cyborgs will not help the future of humanity.
At first, it might sound that turning into a cyborg is a cool and fun thing to do. However, if we keep digging and thinking about it, we can all see that it’s very unsafe and a risky thing to do. I believe that people should continue living as it is for the world, and not do things that will only damage themselves and do nothing for society.
