Should we be afraid of the growing use of AI in society? What role should it play in our world?

Out of all of the debates going on in the world, AI is one of the most discussed topics in the status quo. With all of the benefits of AI aside, many worry about the safety of it in society. While some people may believe that AI is helpful towards society because it can help the future develop more with their advanced technology, I disagree with them. I believe that we should be afraid of the growing use of AI in society because of the economic impacts and the misinformation it can cause.

Although AI provides increased productivity and efficiency, it would take away people’s jobs, replaced by AIs, and result in greater economic gap between poor and advanced countries. For example, AI could lead to more production and therefore more money with the increased amount of intelligence they have. But this can also mean that they can take people’s jobs as well, and the impacts are going to be really complicated. According to research by the IMF, there is a high chance that in the future, 40% of the jobs in the world could be replaced by AI and 60% of jobs in advanced economies will be impacted. This replacement of workers can increase the level of inequality within societies, as well as between countries with advanced economies and poorer economies. For example, advanced economies will have more impact from AI but also more opportunities, while in poorer economies, fewer people would be impacted with fewer opportunities. As you can see from here, this is a huge disadvantage towards some people, which is why we should be afraid of the growing use of AI in society.

Additionally, AI can cause misinformation and even be used for serious crimes through deep fakes. Even though AI can be used for good purposes, there are still chances that it can be used to write and spread misinformations. For example, AI generated pictures are one of the biggest ongoing debates these days- those images are already being used to spread misinformation, and since the generated images are getting better day by day, it’s getting hard to tell what is AI generated and what is real. Some people may argue that everything could be fine if we just don’t use it for something bad. However, the truth is that this is not always the case. We can never promise that everybody will always choose the right thing to do, and not just with AI. There are lots of risks with AI, and therefore I believe we should be afraid of the growing use of AI in society.

Overall, I believe that we should be afraid of the growing use of AI in society because of the economic impacts and the misinformation it can spread. However, this isn’t the only future ahead of us. If we control this situation well enough so that it can also have a huge benefit for our world, AI can also play an important role in our society. If we just use it the correct way, our lives would not be at risk, and only help us without any burdens. I hope in the future, AI isn’t used for bad cases, and I hope that our lives would be normal and impacted positively by AI as well.
