The April Joke
The April Joke
It was hot and sticky where Rosie lived, and she was covered in sweat. Rosie was a young girl, about 20 years old, and had long blonde curls that bounced as she walked. Her large blue eyes were always sparkling with curiosity, from when she was five to now. She went to get lemonade from the kitchen that was as hot as lava, but the yellow liquid only made her mouth burn. She definitely wasn’t enjoying her day. “I HATE SUMMER!” she groaned as she threw herself into her cloud-like bed. As if summer was hating Rosie too, the phone in her pocket started blaring colors and buzzing annoyingly. What now, Rosie thought, gritting her teeth as she answered the call.
“Hello?” Rosie mumbled at the phone. “Rosie!” a familiar voice welcomed her, “It’s Maryam. I have a big favor. A girl named Mia is stuck in her basement. Her parents are on a trip and even if I’m your trainer, I can’t… I can’t really get her out.” Rosie’s eyes widened as she heard her trainer who was literally asking her to save a girl who she couldn’t even save herself. However, she blurted out she’ll save Mia and bolted towards the house Maryam said she lived in. Rosie didn’t know how she was going to save Mia, but she would have to figure that out herself.
The square and huge building was old and dusty, with ivy growing on the walls. Rosie knocked on the door and almost fell right through because the door wasn’t closed. The interior of the house was much more pleasant than the exterior of it. “The basement should be right over-” Rosie shoved the silky curtains out of her way and saw the basement’s woody and damp door. She pressed her ear and could hear muffled yells on the other side. Rosie looked for something big, but couldn’t find anything. She used her skills, trying to punch her way through, but the door didn’t move even an inch. Her hands were red, and her hair was covering her face. She was tempted to give up, but suddenly, her feet were crashing the door with rage. Rosie collapsed onto the floor. She knew her thoughts were right. If Maryam could’t do it, she couldn’t either. As she fell down, her back stabbed on something sharp and pointy. Her eyes watered from both pain and triumph as she grasped the jagged rock. Why didn’t she think of it before? It was a perfect tool for rescuing a person. She somehow managed to cut a hole inside. The silhouette of a girl stepped closer to the crooked hole. It- she didn’t look like a person- stepped out of the hole with a smile on her face. Wait a minute. This wasn’t “Mia”. It was her friend, trainer. It was Maryam.
“What? But Maryam, I thought you told me to be serious while on a mission, but today you…” Rosie trailed off when Maryam held up her hand. “Stop babbling. You don’t need to be serious on a mission when today is April Fools Day, right?” Rosie’s jaw dropped as she watched Maryam laugh hysterically. A few seconds later, the two were both howling with laughter. After they calmed down, Maryam scolded firmly to check the date before becoming so serious. Rosie was still pondering a question she couldn't ask Maryam. She turned around to face her and found out her trainer was raising one eyebrow. Her trainer knew her too well for this.
“Um, Maryam, if this isn’t your house… and not “Mia's”… who’s house is it?” Maryam rolled her eyes as she drolled, “I bought a new house, silly! I told you all in our last meeting. Seriously, don’t you ever listen while training?” I do listen! You just don’t know me well enough! Rosie smiled and laughed as she and Maryam sat down on the couch, drinking some extra-sweet iced tea with lots of ice. As she sipped her tea, she knew it wasn’t the sugar that was making her smile. It was friendship. Friendship and people who cared about each other. Never give up on anything, even if you are tempted to.
